Moisture is part of normal hearing-aid use. Devices may encounter perspiration, humidity, light rain, condensation, skin oils, cosmetics, and repeated cleaning. For a buyer, that makes ingress protection an important product requirement—but it also makes vague phrases such as “waterproof” commercially risky.

An IP rating can provide a standardized reference for enclosure protection. It does not automatically describe every real-life exposure, every component in the kit, or the condition of a device after months of daily wear.

OEM brands and distributors should therefore connect any protection claim to the exact product configuration, test method, report, labeling, and service plan. The objective is not to display the strongest-looking code. It is to make a claim that the complete product program can support.

What an IP rating does—and does not—tell buyers

IEC 60529 classifies degrees of protection provided by electrical enclosures using the IP Code. In general, the code addresses protection against solid-object ingress and water ingress under defined test conditions.

The rating belongs to the enclosure and configuration that were tested. It should not be interpreted as a promise that the product is suitable for swimming, showering, diving, high-pressure cleaning, exposure to every liquid, or unlimited use in humid environments.

A laboratory classification also does not remove the need for routine care. NIDCD advises users to keep hearing aids away from heat and moisture and to clean them as instructed. Those habits remain relevant even when a device has a documented protection rating.

Confirm the exact configuration behind the rating

A hearing aid is a small system with microphones, receiver openings, controls, seams, charging contacts, battery access, tubing or receiver wires, and replaceable acoustic parts. A change to the enclosure or an interface may affect the configuration represented by a previous test.

Before approving a claim, match the report to the commercial SKU. Confirm:

  • model number and product name;
  • housing design, material, and manufacturing revision;
  • rechargeable or replaceable-battery configuration;
  • buttons, covers, ports, microphone openings, and charging contacts;
  • receiver, wire, tubing, earpiece, or other fitted components included in scope;
  • assembly process and sealing materials;
  • firmware or operating state required during the test, when relevant.

If the tested sample differs from the product being ordered, ask for a documented technical assessment or new verification rather than assuming the result transfers automatically.

Read the test report, not only the product page

A marketing page may show only the final rating. A procurement review needs the evidence behind it.

Check the laboratory identity, report date, test standard and edition, sample description, sample quantity, preconditioning, test setup, exposure duration, acceptance criteria, observations, and final result. Product photographs in the report should match the intended SKU.

Ask whether the report covers the complete device or only a housing sample. Clarify whether plugs, covers, battery doors, filters, or other parts had to be installed in a particular way. If the user must perform a step to maintain protection, that requirement belongs in the instructions.

A valid-looking code without traceable sample identity is not enough for responsible B2B approval.

Go beyond a new-unit laboratory result

Aging and repeated daily handling

Hearing aids are inserted, removed, cleaned, charged, and adjusted repeatedly. Seals and interfaces may experience mechanical wear. Exposure to temperature changes, skin oils, wax, and cleaning practices can also influence long-term condition.

A product-development team should decide whether additional checks are needed after simulated handling, drop exposure, button operation, charging cycles, temperature conditioning, or another relevant aging profile. The correct plan depends on the product design, intended use, risk analysis, and target claims.

Sweat, condensation, and chemical exposure

Water-ingress testing does not necessarily reproduce perspiration, sunscreen, hairspray, insect repellent, soap, salt water, or rapid movement between air-conditioned and humid environments. These exposures may affect materials or leave residue around ports and contacts.

Do not silently extend an IP result to liquids or conditions outside the report. If a target user is likely to exercise, work outdoors, or live in a humid climate, include those scenarios in product risk review, instructions, and appropriate supplemental verification.

Functional checks after exposure

Passing an exposure step should be connected to meaningful acceptance criteria. Visual inspection alone may miss a blocked microphone, intermittent charging contact, distorted receiver output, control failure, corrosion, or a delayed problem.

Post-exposure verification may need to assess acoustic performance, charging, controls, wireless operation, indicators, and internal inspection according to the design and test plan. The report should state what was checked and when.

Separate the hearing aid from its accessories

A rating for the hearing aid does not automatically apply to the charging case, cable, power adapter, smartphone, remote microphone, or storage container. Each component has its own enclosure, interfaces, use conditions, and documentation.

This distinction matters in consumer communication. A user may reasonably assume that a moisture-resistant hearing aid can be placed wet into its charger. Unless the instructions expressly allow that, the safer message is to dry and inspect the device as directed before charging.

Packaging and product pages should make the scope of any rating clear so that the accessory set does not inherit an unsupported claim.

For OEM and distribution projects, these features should be documented at exact-SKU level. Buyers should confirm which models and case versions are included, review the applicable IP68 test report, and verify the instructions and operating cycle for the drying and UV functions.

The IP68 rating should still be communicated within its tested conditions rather than as unrestricted permission for swimming, showering, or prolonged immersion. Likewise, a UV sanitizing feature should not be described as medical sterilization or assigned a pathogen-reduction percentage unless the exact case, method, organisms, exposure conditions, and supporting validation justify that claim.

The drying function also does not replace correct cleaning, inspection, or incident handling. Devices should be placed into the case according to the instructions, and visibly wet or damaged charging contacts should be handled using the specified safety procedure.

Translate evidence into responsible claims

Use the exact verified rating and identify the applicable model. Avoid replacing a technical classification with an unlimited word such as “waterproof.” Do not imply that the device is intended for swimming or showering unless the exact product evidence and instructions support that use.

Claim review should align across the website, marketplace listing, packaging, manual, sales presentation, distributor training, and customer-support scripts. If conditions or exclusions are important for safe use, they should not be hidden in one document.

Ingress testing is also separate from regulatory authorization, clinical performance, sound quality, and suitability for an individual user. One successful test does not establish another type of claim.

Build moisture events into after-sales support

Even well-designed products can be exposed outside their intended conditions. Create a clear support pathway for light rain, heavy perspiration, accidental splashes, immersion, visible condensation, or a wet charging contact.

Customer instructions should explain when to switch the device off, how to dry or store it using approved methods, what not to do, and when to stop using it and request service. Support teams need consistent criteria for inspection, replacement, warranty review, and incident escalation.

Returned-unit analysis can also identify recurring entry points, unclear instructions, or user scenarios that were missing from the original design review.

OEM buyer checklist

  • Define realistic moisture, dust, sweat, climate, and handling scenarios for the target users.
  • Match the IP report to the exact SKU and product revision.
  • Confirm the standard, laboratory, samples, setup, criteria, and result.
  • Identify every cover, seal, part, or user action required to maintain protection.
  • Decide whether aging and supplemental exposure checks are needed.
  • Verify function after exposure, not only external appearance.
  • Keep hearing-aid claims separate from charger and accessory claims.
  • Align product pages, packaging, instructions, training, and support language.
  • Approve only claims supported by the exact evidence for the target market.
